Shelf-ready processing makes books, DVDs, and other resources ready to be shelved straight from the box. Backstage has been physically processing library collections for as long as it has been cataloging them, and we’ve become pretty quick.
But what if the shelving process could be even quicker?
Jake Bastian, VP of Collection Management services, can be found throughout the week in his office with at least four cups of coffee at his desk. “I just know we can do it,” he swears. “We already have our team doing the physical processing. We have our catalogers performing shelf-listing, and our on-site team can even help shelve opening day collections. It just makes sense, right? Wouldn’t it be faster if we ship the bookcases themselves pre-shelved?”
Decorations and All
Rolls of plastic wrap and a veritable army of stretch wrap dispensers line our material storage wing. They stand ready to prepare each bookcase for pallets out to our library customers.
“It takes some practice,” admits Jessi, the shipping manager at our Courtney Street office. “Not every shelf ends up totally full. But if you tip the bookcase on its side, most things tend to just, you know. Pile up on one end. They don’t shift around that way.”
Bookcases, wire rack shelving, slatwall panels. Wood, metal, plastic. All product specifications are flexible at Backstage, and that doesn’t stop with our latest stacks-ready processing.

Choose from our add-on customizations for your shelves:
- A stray coffee cup, to resemble when patrons forget theirs in the stacks.
- Bookends: pick from metal, wire, marble, or whimsically carved wood.
- Shelf talkers about the latest releases.
- A little bit of dust, pre-scattered for that lived-in look.
- Older, out-of-date manuals seeded into your collection so that you can experience the joy of weeding straight from the get-go.
