Vice President of Metadata Services

Backstage Library Works is seeking a vice president/product manager to lead its Metadata Services department. This team provides copy cataloging, original MARC record creation, reclassification, and retrospective conversion services for library catalogs, as well as descriptive metadata, transcription, and custom metadata markup for digital image collections.

This position reports to and has strong support from the company president.


  • Manage metadata projects and personnel.
  • Innovate on metadata-related prospects, ideas, and services.
  • Understand the market: collect competitive intelligence, plan strategic coordination, know the competition.
  • Generate revenue and control margin/costs by maintaining and tracking department budget.
  • Provide training and tools to department personnel and to the sales team to broaden internal understanding of Metadata Services products.
  • Coordinate with other Backstage departments—Automation Services, On-site Services, Digitization, and Preservation Microfilm—on shared projects; find new opportunities for internal collaboration.
  • Work closely with Sales and Marketing to develop marketing strategy and cultivate new prospects.
  • Work with Metadata Operations Manager to provide sales team with pricing and samples for new projects.
  • Stay up-to-date in the field through professional participation—attending conferences, reading professional literature, giving presentations.


  • Some travel is required, estimated at 15%, though time away from the office will vary by month.
  • Travel will include visiting clients, participating in presentation opportunities, attending conferences and seminars, and visiting metadata staff in Backstage's Pennsylvania office.


  • Candidate must have an understanding of the metadata services that Backstage provides.
  • Demonstrated excellent customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of common industry standards for MARC and non-MARC metadata.
  • Experience with common cataloging tools such as OCLC Connexion, ClassWeb, and Cataloger’s Desktop.
  • Proven communicator; enjoys speaking with others and listening to their concerns.
  • Ability to tailor solutions to the needs of the client, whether internal or external; can find win/win situations.
  • Previous project management experience, including writing policies/procedures/workflows.
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Exemplary organizational skills are mandatory; able to easily switch between projects throughout the day.


  • Knowledge of at least one integrated library services platform such as Voyager, Sierra, or Alma.
  • Experience using project management software such as Teamwork Projects.


  • MLIS or college degree strongly preferred.


  • Salary range: $53,000 to $69,000, DOE.
  • This is a full-time, fully benefited position.
