Backstage Library Works is seeking a cataloger to work on-site at the Library of Congress, performing original cataloging of English-language materials in the following subject areas: religion, social sciences, and technology.

The project is expected to run 5.5 months, from November 2017 to April 2018, with the possibility of an extension.

The cataloger will work with materials to create original MARC records according to the Library's minimal-level RDA record guidelines.

  • Full-time, long-term, temporary project position
  • 8.5-hour days, minus unpaid 30-minute lunch, 40 hours per week
  • Pay dependent on experience, starting at $14/hour
  • Full benefits, including 8 paid holidays per year 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform original cataloging using RDA standard and local minimal-level guidelines in MARC format
  • Identify headings (name and subject) requiring authority work for referral to library staff
  • Meet daily production levels and standards
  • Make informed decisions within given specifications with little supervision

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Professional/paraprofessional cataloging experience
  • Experience working in Voyager ILS
  • Strong understanding of library standards, including RDA, MARC21, and LCSH
  • Strong knowledge of the Library of Congress Authority file
  • Strong searching skills
  • Attentiveness to detail and quality
  • Work in a deadline-oriented, production environment
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently & productively
  • Learn new skills quickly and thoroughly
  • Basic familiarity with Windows & Microsoft Office suite
  • Type speed minimum: 50+ wpm
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.
  • Must pass a general knowledge test
  • Must pass a background check and drug test prior to appointment
